Episode 3

The Grandfather Story

As a child, she feared the crocodile from Peter Pan but the real monster lived in her grandparents’ home. Left to stay with her volatile, beer-drinking grandfather and his battered wife, she sensed something “bad lurking” in him long before the night he crept into bed beside her and violated her while her grandmother was away. Bleeding, confused, and terrified, she scrubbed her stained nightie clean under the moonlight and never spoke a word, watching him like prey, shielding her younger sisters, and barricading her bedroom door with a chair. Years later, she refused to let the abuse define her, rejecting pity and shame. Instead, she channelled her pain into fierce resolve. And when her grandfather lay dying, frail and hooked to oxygen, she leaned close and whispered the truth he’d spent a lifetime hiding, finally reversing the power, and reclaiming her voice.
